Amazon.com: bOObs: A Guide to Your Girls by Elisabeth Squires
A quick question to our readers. Has anyone purchased this book for themselves, daughters, or loved ones? What do you think about it? It seems like the author has a great campaign running and we have seen posters in book stores around the Seattle area.

Elisabeth Squires also runs a blog column with the SeattleTimes PI. She answers questions and helps young girls like this one: I’m 16. My Breasts Got Big Really Fast.

What a great site!
I have had the book for a while. Really is well done and similar to the tone and support you provide your readers Sara. Elisabeth takes the time to put everything in perspective and I think she has a great way of making girls feel “not alone.”
One great example is that while us women always fixate on dolls and models and magazines and movies and how perfect women are in those forms of “entertainment” – she reminds us that male action figures (page 54) are developing ever increasing bicep size over the years as well. Guys have it just as tough. Once my own daughter – I bought the book for her, she is 12, but I enjoyed it a lot myself – understood this fact she was able to see that superficial “toys” have little meaning in the “real world.”
As far as readers of your website go, there are a few chesty tid-bits sprinkled throughout that can inspire and get a chuckle. On page 102 she tells of a witty young 14 year old girl who gets out of PE by demanding that her principal “look at her giant boobs” and decide if she should really be doing jumping jacks in front of high school boys. She said the discussion ended real fast.
Great book. Wish it was available in more libraries for girls to enjoy.
He PI column seems interesting. Going to read her responses tonight when I get home. Thanks for the tip Sara!
The #1 best tip I think she gives to young girls is on page sixteen.
She says SURVEY YOUR BREAST FRIENDS. What she is saying is basically to have a good look at your friends boobs when girls get together and study all the different shapes and sizes. Once girls learn that no two pairs of boobs are the same, they will be able to accept that their OWN pair is just fine the way it is.
That book looks really interesting – I’m definately considering buying it. I would be interested to know what the chapter on bra fitting is like – do they explain how bras are supposed to fit and how they work, or do they just give measuring instructions? I very much hope it’s the former.
Zoe, I have just started reading through the book tonight and will post my findings soon. Big thumbs up so far.
Just stopped by to say that your website is a great resource for young girls Sara. This book that you are talking about isn’t at my library so I ordered it from Barnes and Noble – I had a gift card left over from Christmas. Hope to get it soon!
it is a great book. Got it when it first came out.
Zoe- Elisabeth offers great info and her book is DEFINITELY worth picking up if you haven’t already, however if you are looking for anything more bra specific (which it sounds like you are,) I did a great deal of research on everything bra-related for my book, The Bra Book: the Fashion Formula to Finding the Perfect Bra. It’s not quite out yet (comes out in November) but is up on Amazon if you want to check it out! Now there is one place where women can go to find not only the perfect fit (and how to know yours is wrong) but also what bra goes under what, how the bra is constructed and why, the future of bras and much, much more!!
Thanks Jene – I’ve added your book to my wish list :-) I did read Elizabeth Squires’ book, and I thought for the most part it was really good. I’d have to refresh my memory before I could write a proper review though!
I finished the book – excellent – a while ago and will interview Elisabeth Squires and post the Q & A online soon. She is wonderful.
Soooo busy lately but we are all slowly getting caught up. :)
