Dear DOLLY DR, I’m 15 and I have really big breasts. They’re double D. Will they affect my health? Cath.

Breasts come in all shapes and sizes, and can often be asymmetrical. It’s very common when your breasts have just finished growing, or are still growing, to worry a lot about whether they’re normal – both in appearance and function. Double D-sized breasts are obviously at the bigger end of the range of normal but there is no reason to worry about the effect on your health.

“Much more important is you feeling happy and good about your body and looking after it properly.”

That means eating healthy foods (sometimes large breasts are partly due to being overweight) and exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, avoiding cigarettes, alcohol and other drugs and generally leading a healthy lifestyle.

Women with large breasts may find it uncomfortable, however, to play certain sports, and can even get a bit of back strain, depending on their body build. When you are physically active you may want to consider wearing very supportive sports bras or tops. It’s also important to learn how to examine your breasts — no matter how big or small — it’s part of learning to take care of your health. Your doctor can explain this to you further and also discuss any other worries you might have about your breasts or other aspects of your health.

If a girl has questions or concerns about breasts or bras, the good news is that there are plenty of women and older girls to ask. But I do not think girls have enough courage to ask. That is why you are doing a great job with your website Sara.

Breasts are just one sign that a girl is getting older and on her way to becoming a woman. It is too bad that breasts are not talked about at school or in the home of girls who need proper breast education. Bigger breasts are scary for girls who get trapped into thinking that they are not growing in the normal range.

There are so many things that I used to worry about when I was younger so I can understand how girls like this one worry about her health. I thought that my boobs would burst if they kept growing or that they would leak.

I was also terrified that my bra could peek out of my clothing at that other girls would see it. I never knew what a normal bra was supposed to look like so I would worry that mine was strange and I would get teased. I did remember owning a bra where the straps would slide off my shoulders constantly and I had a shoulder rash through much of the school year.

If breasts were not so taboo then I think girls would be more willing to ask questions.

I think it is difficult for women of all ages to talk about. That is why so few women get fitted for bras. Parents do not get involved and girls are left to learn on their own. I am sure hiddenfeet helps many girls in my town because of this. Most parents work two jobs and rarely spend time with their kids. At least the girl in this article got some good help.
