The product being advertised here is the Olympus E-3 DSLR camera. Olympus claim that it has the worlds fastest autofocus. The autofocus speed of the Zuiko Digital 12-60mm (24-120mm) f2.8-4.0 SWD lens, combined with the E-3, was measured during in-house testing by Olympus and is based on similar available lenses for digital SLR cameras as of October 17, 2007.

This ad campaign has been around Europe and Japan for many months now. Obviously the staged photo implies that this Olympus DSLR is fast enough to capture a once-in-a-lifetime shot - a shot of a beautiful girl with big boobs and plenty of cleavage.

Clever? Offensive? Stupid and pointless?

Koreans are allowed to get away with ads like this where in the USA it would never get published. Am I right? This never did make the news stands or billboards in the US did it?

    You asked:

    Clever? Offensive? Stupid and pointless?

…and I would say stupid. Yes even as a guy, I think it is stupid. It tells me nothing about the camera apart from an Olympus claim of fast auto-focus. I doubt the girl was bending over “fast” - the moment might have been brief but that requires a fast shutter speed, not auto-focus. I think any SLR could have caught this shot. And yes I know it is fake….but are the breasts? lol.

I will argue that it is clever. And yes, I am a girl.

We and other websites are talking about it. That alone generates PR. Valuable PR that can help a company like Olympus compete against Canon and Nikon.

When you first look at the picture, you look at the girl, and then when you look around the girl, you see that everyone else is looking at the girl. It made me laugh. Humor can help you remember things so this too give the ad a boost.

IMO there is nothing wrong with looking at beautiful people. If girls don’t want attention, don’t dress in a way that demands it. I read hiddenfeet and feel enlightened about my body not ashamed.

I would say clever and a little funny. That is what guys do, they try to cop a look. Ads like this are meant to get you interested, not tell you anything about the camera. I can not remember the last car ad that told me anything more then its name.

    Very Funny!

We can act all pissed off that men enjoy looking at boobs and have since the beginning of time or we can laugh at it. If it were a good looking man and his arms were flexing you better believe I would look!

  5. J says:

It’s ironic how ads that pair beautiful women with products cause you to remember only the beautiful woman or the kind of product but not the name of the product itself! Beer ads with women only encourage people to drink beer, but not necessarily the product that is advertised in the ad.

  6. Sara - Hiddenfeet Owner says:

J, what these companies are doing is building the category. Often times the category a brand falls under is as important as the product itself. If your product is strong in its category nitch, then by building the category your product will get noticed even if you don’t mention the actual item name. Coke and Pepsi both do this often by promoting the “drinking” of soda. Ford and Chevy do this by promoting the “American car.” etc. Ill talk a bit more about this when I get home from work.

Word, Jenny! I always look, and so does hubby. We agree that we got married, not that we went blind, LOL!!

I always forget how much work goes into these pictures and ads. I mean wow, an Art Director, Chief Creative Director, Photographer and so on…

    Clever.

I work for a small advertising company. A sucsessful ad needs to do three things. And this Olympus ad does them all well.

    1. Grab the viewer’s attention.
Large breasts with cleavage right in your face usually does that. And yes both men and women ALWAYS look. Studies say that the hit rate is almost equal between the sexes.
    2. Tell a story.
Like Girlogica says, the viewers eye wanders around the picture and sees all the men looking at her breasts. Everyone is trying to catch a quick glimpse.
    3. Link the story to the product.
Since the glimpse is so quick, the product mentioned in the bottom right corner is said to have fast focus.

It works. Even at my old age (48) I would stop and gander at this Olympus ad if I were to see it in a magazine or on a billboard.

I laughed. I was browsing google because I own this camera along with the Zuiko 12-60mm lens and this came up on lots of sites including this one. You girls post interesting stuff here. *bookmarked*

The E-3 does focus fast and can capture shots like this if thats your thing. As for pretty boobs - not to be rude but girls who dress like that usually want attention. Besides, this was stagged anyway!
